Along Little Santo Domingo
Along Little Santo Domingo is an exploration which stemmed from my interest in documenting the identity of a place, its people and the genuineness that comes with it. After learning Little Santo Domingo was top on a list of endangered places in the United States, I felt the urgency to be there and document it. As I ventured into this neighborhood, I learned of people who are fighting for their right to remain living there, to maintain their businesses, to not be pushed out from it. As it has happened in other neighborhoods across Miami, where gentrification has created social displacement and cultural erasure, neighborhoods where mainly minorities lived. Little Santo Domingo, which is located in the Allapattah neighborhood has been added to the National Trust for Historic Preservation's annual list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places for 2023 as a way to bring awareness the reality of the people who live there and why there needs to be policies to protect them. I also wanted to bring historical images of how Allapattah was a contrast it t =o what we see now, the development of a neighborhood and what its people made of it, and why it is so unique to Miami. The multicultural evidence of migrations is represented in its corners and streets and that's what makes a city unique.
